This title might feel a bit personal, but it’s meant to grab your attention—and for a good reason. I’ve been advocating for everyone, especially men and women in our age group, to remain situationally aware of their surroundings at all times. Recently, a special friend shared a simple, potentially life-saving tip for staying safe—even while in the shower.
Many of us are familiar with life-alert devices or similar services that come with monthly fees to alert 911 in case of a fall. But what if I told you there’s a way to protect yourself using something you likely already own—and it won’t cost you a dime?
Imagine you’re in the shower, and you accidentally slip. Your phone is in another room. How would you call for help? The answer is simple: voice-activated assistants.
If you own an iPhone, you can rely on Siri. Place your phone on the bathroom counter while you shower. If you need help, just say, “Hey Siri, call 911,” and help will be on its way.
For Android users, the process is slightly different but just as effective. Android devices support voice assistants such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Hound, Robin, Extreme, Jarvis, or DataBot. Google Assistant, which comes pre-installed on most Android phones, works seamlessly without additional costs. Some of the other apps may charge fees, but Google Assistant is usually sufficient for emergencies.
Your safety is what matters most. Without a way to call for help, an unexpected fall or emergency could leave you vulnerable for hours—or even days. That’s why it’s crucial to keep your cell phone nearby as you go about your day: whether you’re cooking, gardening, walking, watching TV, or even taking a shower.
To ensure this safety feature is available, check your phone settings to make sure the voice assistant is turned on and ready to respond. A quick setup could make all the difference when it matters most.
Stay safe by being prepared!
